Serial Killer Sunday: Albert Fish

Warning: Do not read these posts if you are easily affected by gore/abuse. Read at your own risk.

This week I decided that I would kick it up a notch and go with a man that perhaps is not as infamous as the rest of them, but one that is worth noting and perhaps one that is quite terrifying due to the fact that this man was not caught until he was an old man, age 65 to be exact, which shows that you can’t trust anyone, not even supposedly harmless little old men.

Year’s active: 1924 to 1932
Number of Killings: 3-10 +
Killing method: Strangulation or Stabbing
Year caught: 1934
Where now: Executed by Electric Chair in Sing Sing Prison, New York 1936

Before I start I just want to say that you should be warned about this one, Albert fish was quite a horrific human being and I perhaps wouldn’t recommend reading on if you don’t have a strong stomach.

Huh, I was just about to type “the most horrific thing about Albert Fish” when I realised it’s quite hard to pinpoint exactly what the most horrific thing about this man was. He was a pedophile, cannibal and serial killer; take your pick.

Fish’s early life was one of confusion and pain. His family had a history of mental illness and at the age of 5 his mother put him in an orphanage because she couldn’t afford to look after him. Here is where he was regularly beaten and humiliated, to which he learnt he enjoyed pain.

At the age of 9, Fish’s mother came to reclaim him and at the age of 12 Albert started a homosexual relationship with a telegraph boy who introduced him to practices such as drinking your own urine and eating your own faeces (I can almost imagine your face right now).

At the age of 20, Fish began molesting and raping young boys mostly under the age of 6. Fish confessed. after being caught, to targeting those who he deemed “mentally retarded” and also African-American children because he believed they “would not be missed.” Fish often also tortured himself, sticking needles up his urethra and he also suffered from religious delusions and hallucinations.

Grace Budd was the last victim that ultimately lead to the capture of Albert Fish. Her brother had put an advert in the paper seeking a job, Fish jumped at this chance and went to the house pretending to want to interview her brother for a job, he was invited to dinner at the house and just as he was about to leave he mentioned a party that his sister was throwing for his niece and invited the young Grace to come with him, she was never seen again. A number of cases had now been related to this where children had been taken by an old man in the same area. Six years after the disappearance of Grace Budd, the Budd family received a letter;

My dear Mrs. Budd,
In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deck hand on the Steamer Tacoma, Capt. John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco for Hong Kong China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone.
At that time there was famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1 to $3 a pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak — chops — or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girls behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price.
John staid there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys one seven, one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet.  Then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them — tortured them — to make their meat good and tender.
First he killed the 11 year old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was Cooked and eaten except the head — bones and guts. He was Roasted in the oven (all of his ass), boiled, broiled, fried and stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time, I was living at 409 E 100 st., near — right side. He told me so often how good Human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it.
On Sunday June the 3rd 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese — strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her.
On the pretense of taking her to a party. You said Yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wildflowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them.
When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down the stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mamma.
First I stripped her naked. How she did kick — bite and scratch. I choked her to death, then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms. Cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me nine days to eat her entire body. I did not f*** her though I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.

The stationary on the envelope had an emblem for the New York Private Chauffeur’s Benevolent Association, the members of this association were called to a meeting and their handwriting tested, a janitor came forward and said that he had taken some stationary and left it in his old rooming house, giving them the address. When the police arrived at the address the land lady was shocked at the description of the man, this ultimately lead them to Albert Fish. He later confessed and was sentenced to death on January 16th 1936.

What are your thoughts on Fish? Anything to add? Or any serial killer you want to hear more about? Let me know!
